Lately I’ve been thinking more about how much guides and the expedition team actually matter on trips like this. A few years ago I went on a small expedition-style cruise (not polar, but still pretty remote), and honestly the crew made the whole experience. The guide wasn’t just reciting facts — he helped people feel safe, adjusted plans when weather changed, and somehow kept everyone calm when things didn’t go perfectly. Now I’m considering a polar trip and wondering: how big of a role do guides really play there? Is it mostly logistics and safety, or do they actually shape how memorable the trip becomes?
