Finding good Minecraft server IP addresses

Apparently, finding reliable Minecraft servers can be quite a challenge these days. I've been trying to get back into multiplayer gaming with some friends, and every time we pick a server, it either has terrible lag or it's constantly crashing. We spend more time looking for a good place to play than actually playing the game itself. Does anyone have any tips on how to efficiently search for quality servers? It feels like wading through an ocean of options without a map. I'm specifically interested in finding servers with stable connections and active communities. What criteria do you all usually use when you're trying to find a new server experience?
