Different Types of Spine Surgery

The spine provides stability and strength to our bodies every time we move. The spinal vertebrae (bones), also protect our spinal cord. An experienced orthopedic surgeon must address any issues in the spine.

To treat your pain and debilitating back problems, you will first try minimally invasive techniques such as pain injections. Your orthopedist might recommend minimally invasive spine surgery if these methods fail to solve the problem.

There are many types of spine surgery that can be helpful for those suffering from back pain.

Lumbar Decompression Surgery to Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar decompression surgery (also called a lumbar lumbar laminectomy) is performed to correct the narrowing in the spinal canal, also known as spinal stenosis. The surgeon will remove any or all of the lamina that is pressing against the what is Spinal Stenosis?, causing severe pain.

Because of narrowing in the spinal canal over time, spinal stenosis puts pressure on the spine. Surgery is performed to open the canal and release this pressure. The surgeon may also remove excess tissue or bone spurs.

Lumbar Discectomy

A lumbar diskectomy is spine surgery that involves the removal of a damaged disc in the lower back. There are two kinds of Lumbar Disectomy: open or minimally invasive arthroscopic. For a herniated disc at the lumbar region, open spine surgery is more common.

Herniated Disc Surgery

A surgeon will perform surgery to remove a portion or all of a herniated disk. A surgeon may elect to remove the entire disc and allow the adjacent vertebrae to fuse to stop disc pain. However, spinal fusion can cause you to be unable to move the affected area of your back so it is important to discuss this with your doctor. However, spinal fusion surgery has become safer and less dangerous than in the past.

Spinal Fusion Surgery

The surgeon joins two vertebrae adjacent to one another during a spinal fusion. This prevents pain from being caused by them moving against each other. To connect the vertebrae together, the surgeon uses small rods and screws. They are then allowed to heal naturally and fuse together. To help the vertebrae fuse, the doctor may use a small bone transplant from another part.
