Return to 'Putting and Tapping' in 2025
Japanese major leaguer Shohei Ohtani completed elbow surgery. Starting in 2025, he will serve as both a pitcher and a batter.
Ohtani said on his SNS on the 20th (Korea time), "The surgery was completed safely. I will try to get back to the ground as soon as possible," he said.
The Angels and Ohtani's agent also said they underwent surgery under Dr. Neil Elatrache's home at the Kelan Jove Clinic in Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Elatrache performed Ryu Hyun-jin's elbow ligament conjugation surgery in 2015. Ohtani also underwent elbow ligament conjugation surgery from Dr. Elatrache in 2018.
Ohtani was diagnosed with ligament damage in his right elbow last month and suspended his pitching duties. This month, he was unable to play even as a batter due to pain in his right side.
In this season, he played in 23 games as a pitcher, recording 10 wins, 5 losses, 167 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.14. As a batter, he played in 135 games with a batting average of 0.304, 44 home runs, 95 RBIs, and 20 steals, with a 1.066 on-base plus slugging percentage.
Ohtani, who underwent elbow surgery, can only play the batter's role in 2024. Pitching is available from 2025. The return stage of the big league is expected to be the opening game of the 2024 season. Dr. Elatrache said, "We will be able to strike from the opening game without any major problems."
However, it is unclear whether he will be able to play the opening game in the Angels uniform. Ohtani, who will become a free agent after the end of this season, is drawing attention from a number of clubs, including the New York Mets.
