"I don't dwell on the record. I'm just doing my best."
Former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal (Spain), who is currently on tour, told his country's TV network Movista Plus that Novak Djokovic (Serbia) recorded a Grand Slam V24, saying, "Record was not the top priority."
Nadal, who won 22 Grand Slams, has not been on tour since suffering a left hip injury at the Australian Open in January this year. On the other hand, Djokovic, his long-time rival, showed strength that he still does not know the decline, and won three Grand Slams this season alone. Last week, she returned to the top of the world ranking for the first time in about three months, and is about to become the eighth annual No. 1 in history.
Nadal said, "Of course, I wanted to be a tennis player who won the most Grand Slam titles ever. There is no doubt about that. I'm trying to be the best player possible because it's a sport." Nadal, however, says he has not insisted on setting the record.
"For me, it has become an obsession to win first place in the number of titles in four major competitions, and it is not. You won't complain about not achieving it, and you don't always complain about it in life. There is one reason to think so. Because I think I did everything I could to do my best job."
Nadal, who said he has always prioritized doing his best without worrying about the results, continued, saying there is a difference between Djokovic, who pursues the best results, and his "stance or character in tennis."
Novak works hard at everything. I feel like I'm living more strictly than I am. He would have felt even more frustrated if he had not achieved the most wins in the four major competitions. I think he's the best player because he has that idea."
"I am also an ambitious person, but in my case, when things didn't work out on the court, I was able to see things in a big way without getting annoyed or getting angry more than I needed to. That's my way of life. Different cultures and different players and countries are gaining experience in different styles. I've lived with the same feeling I've just said and I'm happy with it myself."
Nadal's interview alone cannot evaluate the two players. Maybe there's only two people (we don't know) who have faced each other more than 60 times on the court and have a long rivalry.
