Macau mandates all athletics video slots to wear watches by end of 2024

It announced that many ground-based video slots in enclaves should have screen clocks as standard by the end of 2024.

The government agency detailed that the guidelines are within the city's new electronic game console technology standard 2.0 regulations, which took effect on the 1st of this month. Sources explained that these new rules apply to all thousands of land-based video slots in former Portuguese residences and are intended to control the watchdog's approach to local gambling sites going forward.



The Gaming Inspection Coordination Bureau reportedly says the new rules will mandate a digital watch on the lower right of the main screen for all slots in Macau. This effect is known to require flash at the start of each player session and every 10 minutes to indicate the current time through the 12-hour format.



Electronic game console technology standard 2.0 regulations further prohibit all new slots in Macau from using hidden buttons or secret touch points that can affect gameplay. Regulators say the restriction covers the interface area and is said to have been included after considering recent advances in touchscreen technology.



In addition, it claimed that operators behind 41 casinos in Macau and many of their game providers are currently operating a 'delay period' to implement new watch instructions and give them enough time to modify existing machines. Nevertheless, it is known that the slots used in January 2025 must be fully compliant with the new regulations.



As for the reasons behind the watch coercion, the Gaming Inspection Coordination Agency announced that the requirement had been added as part of an effort to promote responsible gambling practices.
