162nd-ranked Jang Soo-soo defeats 2020 Australian Open winner Kenin to reach Korea Open round of 16
Jang Soo-jung of Korea plays against Sofia Kenin of the United States during their singles round of 32 match at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour Hana Bank Korea Open 2023 at the Olympic Tennis Center in Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea, Tuesday afternoon.
Jang Soo-jeong (162nd, Daegu City Hall) has reached the second round of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour Hana Bank Korea Open (total prize money: $259,303) singles event.
Jang defeated defending champion Sofia Kenin (30th-ranked USA) 2-0 (6-1 6-4) in the first round of the singles main draw on the second day of the tournament at Olympic Park Tennis Courts in Songpa-gu, Seoul on Tuesday.
With her victory over 2020 Australian Open champion Kenin, Jang won her first WTA Tour singles main draw in eight months since the Thailand Open in February.
Narrowing it down to the Korea Open, it was her first singles main draw victory in 10 years since 2013. On that occasion, Jang reached the quarterfinals.
After a convincing first round victory, she would meet the winner of the Emina Vectas (116th-ranked USA)-Laura Pigosi (118th-ranked Brazil) match in the second round.
Jang faced a tough opponent in Kenin, who won five games in a row from 1-1 in the first set.
In the second set, she held her serve to take a 4-3 lead and book her place in the round of 16.
Having won her first meeting with Kenin 2-0 in 2018, Jang Jang-jeong took down the same opponent this time around to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head. 스포츠토토맨
