Baek Da-yeon (No. 569, NH Nonghyup Bank) defeated powerhouse Jelena Ostapenko (No. 13, Latvia) in the first round of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour Hana Bank Korea Open ($259,303 total prize money).
Baek Da-yeon came from behind to defeat Ostapenko 2-1 (3-6 6-1 7-6) in the first round of the singles main draw on the second day of the tournament at the Olympic Park Tennis Courts in Songpa-gu, Seoul on Tuesday.
Paik, who won a bronze medal in the women's doubles event at the recently concluded Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, continued her recent rise to prominence by defeating Ostapenko, a world number one who won the French Open in 2017 and the Coria Open that year.
Ostapenko was attempting to return to the Korea Open crown after a six-year absence in 2017, but was thwarted by Baek's dominance.
Baek will now face Kimberly Burrell (ranked 102nd-Australia) in the second round.
Jang Jang-jung of South Korea plays against Sofia Kenin of the United States during their singles round of 32 match at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour Hana Bank Korea Open 2023 at the Olympic Tennis Center in Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea, Tuesday afternoon.
Baek Da-yeon was down 3-5 in the third set of her 1-1 tiebreaker, but broke Ostapenko's service game.
She went on to win the tiebreaker 7-4.
Jang Soo-jeong (162nd, Daegu City Hall) defeated defending champion Sofia Kenin (30th, USA) 2-0 (6-1 6-4) in the first round of the singles main draw.
Jang's victory over Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion, marked her first WTA Tour singles main draw victory in eight months since the Thailand Open in February.
Narrowing it down to the Korea Open, it was her first singles main draw victory in 10 years since 2013. On that occasion, Jang reached the quarterfinals.
After a comfortable first round victory, Hsieh will meet Emina Vektas (116th-ranked USA) in the second round.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Jessica Pegula (No. 4-USA) defeated Viktoriya Kuzmova (No. 112-Slovakia) 2-0 (6-2 6-4) in the first round.
