World No. 13 Ostapenko upsets world no.
162nd-ranked Jang Soo-duo defeated 30th-ranked Kenin
South Korean women's tennis hopeful Paik Da-yeon plays against Yelena Ostapenko during their first round match at the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour Korea Open at the Olympic Park tennis court in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday. Baek won the match 2-1.
South Korean women's tennis prospect Baek Da-yeon (21-NH Nonghyup Bank-World No. 569) upset 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko (26-Latvia-13). Jang Soo-ju (28-Daegu City Hall-162nd) followed up her victory over 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin (25-USA-30th).
Baek Da-yeon, fresh off a bronze medal in the women's doubles at the Hangzhou Asian Games, came from behind to beat Ostapenko 2-1 (3-6, 6-1, 7-6) in the first round (Round of 32) of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour Coria Open on Tuesday at the Olympic Park tennis courts in Seoul. Ostapenko is the 2017 champion of the event and last year's runner-up and is seeded second in this year's tournament.
Baek said, "I thought it was an honor just to play against the 13th-ranked player in the world. In the first set, I was nervous and froze a lot, but thanks to the support of my fans at home, I was able to regain my confidence in the second set," said Baek. Baek Da-yeon will play Kimberly Burrell (25-AUS-102nd) in the second round.
Jang Soo-jeong also reached the second round of the tournament for the first time in 10 years with a 2-0 (6-1, 6-4) win over Kenin in 2013. This is the first time Jang has defeated a player ranked in the top 30 in the world. Previously, she had defeated then-No. 33 Klara Jakopalova (41-Czech Republic) in the first round of this event in 2013. Jang will play Emina Bechtas (30-USA-116th) in the second round.
"In 2013, I came out with more of a learning attitude than a winning attitude, but now I still want to win a little bit more," said Chang, who reached the quarterfinals of this event after defeating Ons Jaber (29-Tunisia-7th) in the round of 16. "I will prepare well for my second round match."
Top-seeded Jessica Pegula (29-U.S., No. 4) also reached the round of 16 with a 2-0 (6-2, 6-4) win over Viktoria Kuzmova (25-Slovakia, No. 112). Pegula has Korean blood in her veins. Her mother, Kim Pegula, 54, was born in Seoul but was adopted by the United States in 1974. Pegula will face Ashleen Kruger (19 - World No. 80 - USA) in the round of 16. 스포츠토토
