Garrett Cole wins 'unanimous' Cy Young Award 11 years after debut

Second-place finisher hasn't won the award in two years
The NL Cy Young Award was won by the San Diego Snell

Gerrit Cole (33-New York Yankees-photo) has won the American League Cy Young Award, 11 years after making his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut. Cole was recognized as the top pitcher in the American League (AL) this year after sweeping all 30 first-place votes in the American League (AL) Cy Young Award voting released by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) on Saturday. Cole finished the season with a 15-4 record (3rd), 2.63 ERA (1st), and 222 strikeouts (3rd).

From his MLB debut in 2013 through this year, Cole has totaled 145 wins (75 losses). Only two pitchers have more wins than Cole in that span, Max Scherzer (39-Texas - 162) and Clayton Kershaw (35-LA Dodgers - 149). Only Scherzer (2538) has more strikeouts than Cole (2152) over the same period. But while Scherzer has won the Cy Young Award three times and Kershaw twice, Cole has never finished first in the voting of the press corps. He finished in the top five five times, including two second-place finishes.

"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of winning a Cy Young Award in a Yankees uniform," said Cole, who has been playing for his childhood team since 2020 after stints in Pittsburgh (2013-2017) and Houston (2018, 2019). Today I finally got to fulfill that dream," Cole said. It's been 22 years since a Yankees pitcher won the Cy Young since Roger Clemens (61) in 2001.

The National League (NL) Cy Young Award went to Kim's (28) San Diego teammate Blake Snell (31). Snell received 28 of 30 first-place votes. Snell posted 14 wins (tied for fifth) and nine losses this season, with a 2.25 ERA (first) and 234 strikeouts (second). Snell, who previously won the AL Cy Young Award in 2018 while with Tampa Bay, becomes the seventh pitcher to win the award in both leagues. 19가이드03
