A statue honoring the national sport of taekwondo has been installed at the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Olympic Museum. There are a total of 35 Olympic sports (28 in the summer and seven in the winter) that are officially recognized at both the Summer and Winter Games, but taekwondo is one of only 10 sports with a sculpture at the Olympic Museum. The others are athletics, gymnastics, soccer, basketball, wrestling, and cycling. The inclusion of a taekwondo statue signifies the sport's growing prominence in the Olympics.

A statue of taekwondo was unveiled at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, home of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), on Friday. IOC Member Kim Jae-yul, IOC President Thomas Bach, WTF President Choi Joong-won, and IOC Vice-President Sermien Ng posed for a photo in front of the statue.

The IOC on Friday unveiled a statue of taekwondo at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, where it is headquartered. The unveiling ceremony was attended by IOC President Thomas Bach, WTF President Choi Joong-won, and IOC Member Kim Jae-yul. "I am delighted to see such an iconic representation of taekwondo at the Olympic Museum," said IOC President Bach. "The statue shows that taekwondo has gained a strong place not only in the Olympic Games but also in the international community. Taekwondo has become the fastest growing sport in the world and one of the most beloved sports in the world." "There was a time when taekwondo was always at the top of the list whenever there was talk of sports being removed from the Olympic program," said Cho. However, by working with taekwondo practitioners around the world, we have been able to make changes and create new opportunities." Taekwondo, which first became an official sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has been threatened with exclusion several times since. "The sports that are represented in the Olympic Museum have one thing in common: they have been part of the history of the modern Olympic Games or have been recognized by the IOC as core Olympic partners," said WT. Taekwondo has been recognized as a core Olympic sport."

The WTF-established Taekwondo Philanthropy Foundation also received this year's Olympic Cup from the IOC. The Olympic Cup is 117 years old, having been established in 1906 at the initiative of Baron Pierre Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. It is awarded to organizations that contribute to the promotion of amateur sports and the development of the Olympic Games. The Taekwondo Charity Foundation was recognized for its contribution to world peace. The organization has been teaching taekwondo to refugee youth who have been displaced by war or natural disasters. 19가이드03
