"It was positive, it could be used again"

Coach Jurgen Klinsmann has raised the possibility of restarting the three-back tactic.

South Korea's national soccer team, led by head coach Klinsmann, advanced to the quarterfinals by winning 4-2 in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 with Saudi Arabia in the round of 16 of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup at Education City Stadium in Alayyan, Qatar on the 31st (Korea time).

South Korea previously lost six points in three group matches, the most in the Asian Cup group stage. Despite having Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich), who was recognized as one of the best defenders in Europe, the team failed to shake off anxiety over its defense.

As a result, he made drastic changes in the first game of the tournament. Klinsmann surprised everyone by bringing up a three-back tactic, not a four-back tactic that he had always used.

We wanted to increase the number of defense players to display stable performance. Kim Min-jae, Kim Young-kwon, and Jung Seung-hyun (Ulsan HD) three central defenders worked together, while Seol Young-woo (Ulsan HD) and Kim Tae-hwan (Jeonbuk Hyundai) also joined defense depending on circumstances.

The defense was stable, but the offense was dull. Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur), who played as a forward striker, was often isolated alone, and as a result, he failed to capitalize on the attack even if he had the opportunity.

Korea's defense collapsed as soon as the beginning of the second half. Abdullah Haji Ladif, who was substituted for the team, unexpectedly rushed in and scored the first goal.

Having nowhere to back down, South Korea ultimately chose to attack. The team switched from three-back to four-back and started a hunt for an equalizer.

Cho Kyu-sung (Mit Whelan), who was substituted in the end, scored a golden equalizer just before the closing of the second half, making his team revive. It was Cho's first goal at this year's event, as he had no goal in three previous group matches.

It led to a penalty shootout after extra time, and Korea won thanks to stellar defense by Cho Hyun-woo (Ulsan HD). Cho blocked shots from Saudi Arabia's No. 3 and No. 4 kickers in succession to lead Korea to the quarterfinals.

It is hard to say that Klinsmann's "surprise" three-back tactic was perfect. However, the team won the game.

Coach Klinsmann explained the reason for the three-back tactic, "I think we should have several cards as a coach."

As for the reason for switching back to the four-back tactic around the 20th minute of the second half, he said, "We lost a point in the early second half, so we needed a change, and we switched back to the four-back to go aggressive."

"The three-back was positive, and I think I can use it again," he said.

South Korea will play Australia in the quarterfinals at 12:30 a.m. on the 3rd. It remains to be seen whether the team will be able to see Klinsmann's three-back tactics in the match.
