"I wanted to learn from Director Ko Jung-woon."

Kim Won-kyun conducted an interview at 2 p.m. on the 7th at the Lakhee Hotel in Gwangyang at the third media camp of the K-League winter training in the 2024 season.

Born in 1992, Kim Won-gyun is already at the age of veteran. He made his K-League debut when he joined FC Seoul in 2015. He had difficulties in competing for the starting line-up in Seoul and left for Gangwon FC in the summer of 2015. He returned to Seoul in 2017 and began to establish himself. Throughout the seasons, Kim has increased his playing time by going back and forth between starting and replacing players.

However, he suffered an injury in 2019 and failed to play properly in 2019 and 2020. After returning to injury, he showed good performance again and led a solid defense in Seoul. Afterwards, he moved to Chungcheongbuk-do Cheongju FC last season and entered the K League 2. As a veteran defender, he took the center stage in Cheongju, and Cheongju had a successful season, ranking eighth in his first professional season.

Ahead of this season's opening, Kim Won-gyun moved to Gimpo. Kim was the team that lost the most points by allowing 25 points last season. However, the team's core defense players, including Cho Sung-kwon and Kim Tae-han, have left a gap. Coach Ko Jung-woon plans to come up with a new defense combination by recruiting Kim Won-gyun and Lee Yong-hyuk. Kim advanced to the playoffs as the third place finisher last season and failed to be promoted due to a unfortunate loss to Gangwon in the promotion playoff. Kim is seeking promotion again this season. Kim Won-gyun's role is important for Kim to achieve his goal.

#Fourback and Threeback

"I experienced both four-back and three-back. When I was in Seoul, there is a strong perception that I would prefer three-back because I played as a three-back player. However, I prefer four-back. However, since three-back is not uncomfortable, I will create a solid team according to the situation.

#Difference between K League 1 and K League 2

K-League 1 basically has a lot of talented players and plays by controlling the tempo when playing games. On the other hand, K-League 2 has fewer players and lacks individual skills than K-League 1, but K-League 2 soccer is very difficult and difficult. The game is tight and the airlift is fast, so more physical parts are needed.

#Gimpo transfer

Coach Ko Jung-woon contacted me when I was looking for the team. I felt a lot when I faced Gimpo in Cheongju last season. I wanted to learn from coach Ko Jung-woon because I felt that the team was strong defensively.

#Experience with Kimpo

Last season, I played against Kimpo for the first time in Cheongju. Coach Ko Jung-woon seemed to emphasize responding quickly and defending. When I played against Kimpo, I felt that all the players played hard and were a really good team in terms of pressure and defense.

#Meeting Cheongju

Last season, Gimpo was particularly weak against Cheongju. I really want to win because it's my old team. Still, I hope Cheongju coach Choi Yoon-kyum goes well.

#Adapted to life in Gimpo

When I moved to Gimpo, I didn't know any of the players. Fortunately, the players I know began to join. As I got to know (Kim) Kyung-joon, Seo Bo-min, and Kim Seong-ju came along, I got to know someone. Still, all the Gimpo players are nice and talk to me first, so I think we got to know each other quickly.

#Burden as a veteran

In the past, I only had to trust my older brothers and follow them, but now I'm close to old age. I think I need to help my juniors at least one more thing. Gimpo performed so well last season and was great defensively. I think Coach Ko Jung-woon wanted it because he has more experience than the players who were there last season, but I think he should play accordingly. I'm learning a lot from Coach Ko Jung-woon while transferring to Gimpo and training. I'll try to keep up with my juniors and perform as well as last season.

#Pressure for the 3rd place in Gimpo last season

The existing players said their technical and build-up have improved a lot compared to last season. I felt my defensive part getting better during training than when I first came here. Coach Ko Jung-woon also said he would make a good defense because he is confident. I think I know why the coach is so confident. I will try to do well this season as well.

#Goals for this season

I got a big injury in 2019 and have had minor injuries ever since. I didn't have one before, but I've always been accompanied by injuries since 2019. I didn't play many games last season either due to injuries. I want to play in many games this season without any injuries because I feel like I've been in good shape in Cheongju and even after moving to Gimpo.
