"FA Market is Strange, Abnormal" Refusing More Money and Returning to the FA

Matt Chapman 31, who was considered the biggest free agent infielder but was uncomfortable with the cold market response, chose to play for the FA again while wearing the San Francisco Giants uniform. Super Agent Scott Boras 72 also had no choice.

Chapman held a press conference at Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona, on the 5th. The contract, which includes two opt-outs with a three-year guarantee of $54 million, was officially announced the previous day the 4th, and he had his first meeting with the media on the day.

The terms of the contract were a down payment of $2 million and a salary of $16 million this year, with $17 million player option $2 million buyout, $18 million player option $3 million buyout in 2026, and $20 million mutual option $1 million buyout in 2027.

Chapman is guaranteed a three-year deal worth 54 million U.S. dollars, and if the player and the club implement both options in 2027, the deal will reach up to 73 million dollars in four years. It is a disappointing deal for Chapman, who initially expected to sign a large contract worth more than 100 million dollars. However, he displayed his willingness to serve as an FA by scoring opt-outs that could enable him to become an FA after this year and next season.

Chapman had other options. "Chapman had his own idea. He could have signed a long-term contract and had a bigger money guarantee, but he chose to bet on himself. I want to guarantee as much money as possible to the players, but it is also important to create an environment where players can feel comfortable," said Boras, who attended the press conference.

Chapman said, "This FA market was definitely weird, and the process was abnormal. If I couldn't sign a long-term contract, I was going to bet on myself with a short-term contract that included opt-out." He is determined to win again with a short-term contract rather than a multi-year contract that is ambiguous.

Coach Bob Melvin's presence for five years during the Oakland Athletics from 2017 to 2021 is one of the reasons Chapman chose San Francisco. Boras said, "I thought about what kind of environment Chapman will be in in the future. In that sense, San Francisco certainly has a premium," and explained that his strong relationship with coach Melvin influenced Chapman's choice.

Chapman also suffered from unfavorable injury conditions, such as going on the injured list with a sprained right middle finger ligament in the second half of last year. "Although the injury affected the injury, it affected the batter's box. I didn't feel consistent with how I swung the bat, and I couldn't keep my rhythm. I needed a break, but it wasn't easy during the season. I was unlucky, but it can happen when I play baseball. I learned another thing from it, and I'm looking forward to this season," he said confidently.

"If you look at third basemen such as Adrian Beltre and Mike Schmidt, they have reached the highest level since they were 30 years old and have been playing at a very high level," Boras said. "Many third basemen had their best seasons at the age of 34-35," he said, adding that Chapman, who is 31 years old this year, expects to rebound enough this year to win a long-term contract.

Chapman, a third baseman who was selected by Oakland as the 25th overall pick in the first round in the 2014 draft, has played for the Toronto Blue Jays for the past two years, recording a batting average of 240 754 hits in 3,138 at-bats of 155 homers and 426 RBIs in seven major league seasons. He won the Gold Glove in the American League AL third baseman category four times 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023 and won the Platinum Glove AL category, which is given to the top defender, for the second consecutive year from 2018 to 2019. Since 2017, his 97.3% ERA has ranked second among third basemen behind Nolan Arenado 97.4% of St. Louis Cardinals.

Chapman, who had a career-high season in 2019 with a career-high 26 home runs and 91 RBIs for the All-Star and Gold Glove sixth in the AL MVP, was offered a 10-year, $150 million extension by Oakland after the season, but declined. With Chapman's chances of staying reduced, Oakland traded him to Toronto in 2022.

Last year, Chapman was offered a 125 million dollar extension to a four- to five-year contract by Toronto, but he declined to accept the offer and ended the FA season. However, he failed to make a clear rebound in 140 games with a batting average of 240 122 hits in 509 with 17 homers and 54 RBIs and an OPS of .755. He received the gold glove in the third baseman's fourth career AL, but the FA market value did not increase as the batting average did not rise. Boras led negotiations for a long-term game, but he struggled to build a new nest in San Francisco only during the spring training in March. He effectively pitched a one-year FA re-entry game by signing a three-year contract that included two opt-outs. 스포츠토토
