Vietnam, China pledge to fight against cross-border betting

Vietnam and China have agreed to push for bilateral cooperation on "cross-border gambling" among a number of law enforcement issues. The agreement comes after Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Fu Cheng made an official visit to China on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 31-Nov. 1), the Vietnamese government news agency VGP reported.

The pledge to tackle cross-border gambling was mentioned in a statement issued jointly by the two countries.

The Vietnamese official's visit to China was at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who showed the two in-person Chinese and Vietnamese media.

The statement noted that Vietnam and China will promote cooperation on "terrorism" and "color revolution." The term was previously used by China to describe the Hong Kong protests: "drug crimes, cyber crimes, cross-border gambling, human trafficking and high-tech crimes" and "wanted criminal tracking."

The joint statement also included an agreement to promote tourism, but noted that such efforts would have to be in line with the "pandemic prevention policies" of both countries.

Many government departments in China have made statements over the past few years about cracking down on citizens traveling abroad to play casinos or engaging in online betting. China's revised criminal law makes it illegal to help others in such activities. The law has been in effect since March 1, 2021.
