Gangwon Plans to Increase Casino Floor 10pct

Kangwon Land, the country's only casino operator open to locals, said Friday it plans to expand its casino floor area by a little more than 10 percent from 14,053 square meters to 15,486 square meters in an as yet-to-be-determined date. The resort will also increase the total number of seats at restaurants and bars by 71.4 percent from 140 to 240.

In response to phone inquiries from GGRAsia, a Kangwon Land official said the expansion plan was based on feedback from customers that the game area was about 60% smaller than the average floor of the country's foreign-only casinos.

The representative added that the timing of the expansion will depend on the design schedule of all contractors who can be hired to perform the work.

The company said its board approved a 28.4 billion won ($23.7 million) allocation for investment in the venue's "expansion and remodeling," without specifying whether it was allocated to casino facilities.

Kangwon Land accounted for nearly 66% of the 1.18 trillion won ($983 million) in casino revenue generated at 17 casinos in the country in 2021, according to preliminary figures released recently by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

On Friday, Kangwon Land's board of directors also decided later to resume operations of 32 table games suspended due to capacity restrictions at Kangwon Land (pictured) due to COVID-19 measures.

Kangwon Land currently operates 161 table games and 169 slot machines, plus stock of other games, including 1,191 "video games" such as video roulette and video baccarat, which management calls.

Kangwon Land also announced on Friday that it will maintain its current casino resort operating system through Feb. 20, receiving up to 3,000 guests daily. That's 50% of its pre-pandemic level of 6,000 visitors.

Also, for now, the daily opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., which will be introduced on Dec. 18. The decision coincides with South Korea's recent extension of social distancing rules as a response to COVID-19.
