Jeju still agonizes over online betting at casinos, drops locals' ideas

According to local media reports, Jeju, a semi-autonomous South Korean island, is still considering the possibility of allowing bricks and mortar casinos, which offer remote gambling via the internet to foreign players, as a way to boost its business amid travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal was mentioned in October last year.

However, the island withdrew its suggestion that it might offer casino gambling to the Korean people. Currently, casinos on the island (example in the picture) are only for foreigners.

According to several Korean-language media reports, Jeju authorities received many objections to allowing domestic customers to gamble at Jeju venues. The objections included Gangwon residents, who currently operate the only Korean casino that Kangwon Land can offer bets to domestic customers.

A study on the possibility of opening Jeju to domestic athletes – which would have required national government approval – and a study on online gambling was completed in September last year.
