S. Korea's GKL September casino sales fall 6 pct

Grand Korea Leisure Inc. (GKL), a Korean game operator, said Friday that its casino sales fell in September from a year earlier. The company reported a decrease of 4.01 billion won (US$33.4 million) in casino sales for the month, 5.7 percent from a year earlier.

On a month-on-month basis, casino sales fell 24.5% in September compared to August.

The year-on-year drop in sales was attributed to a 7.3 percent drop in table game sales during the month of September to nearly W34.72 billion. In a filing with the Korea Exchange, the company said machine game sales rose 6.7 percent year-on-year to about W5.29 billion.

The company's monthly update does not provide a comment on the reasons for the earnings change.

GKL is a subsidiary of the Korea Tourism Organization, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Korea. The casino operator, under the Seven Luck brand, runs three foreigner-only casinos in Korea, two in the capital city of Seoul and one in the southern port city of Busan.

The company said casino sales fell 2.3% year-on-year to about 360.13 billion won in the first nine months of 2019. Table game sales fell 3.3% to 315.1 billion won during the period, while machine game sales rose 5.2% to 450.30 billion won.

GKL said in August its second-quarter net profit fell 26.2% year-on-year to just over 20.05 billion won.
