KOVO Women's Tryout Starts
Clubs to find foreign players who will determine farming in a season and foreign players to receive their choices are busy.
The 2024 KOVO women's foreign player tryout organized by the Korea Volleyball Federation kicked off on the 7th. The tryout will be held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates for three days until the 9th, with 37 players from 15 countries participating as three out of 40 players who went through preliminary evaluation of the team were absent.
Among the existing foreign players, 41 applicants (Hyundai E&C Moma, Heungkuk Life Willow, GS Caltex Silva, and Korea Expressway Corporation Bukirich) are waiting for the club's choice.
The first step was a medical check-up at the Dubai Science Park on Holiday Inn and Sweet. Club officials and coaching staff closely watched a local doctor check-up on players. "The detailed selection strategy is a secret," said Ko Hee-jin, head coach of the association. After renewing his contract with the Asian quarter's Apogit Spiker Mega, the association chief inspected resources outside heaters.
In the afternoon, the team moved to the NAS Sports Complex and conducted part of its physical examination. Its weight, running jump, and standing reach were measured. On Saturday, it measures standing jump and height. After warming up through stretching, the players earnestly started practicing. As most of the players were wing strikers, local setters participated in the exhibition, and the team played a 6 to 6 game without Libero.
After the practice matches, players took a situation setting test to assess their competence. Outside heaters engaged in training to receive, attack, hit attack again, and participate in blocking. Players who strength is serving also sometimes hit serve. IBK Industrial Bank coach Yeo Oh-hyeon and Jeonggwanjang coach Lee Kang-ju, who stepped up to help players evaluate each other, displayed impressive defense performance and were applauded. Hyundai E&C coach Jang Young-ki and Pepper Savings Bank senior coach Lee Yong-hee constantly hit the ball.
Overall, the players did not look as good as they were in their best condition. While the prevailing view is that "the players are not as good as they were last year," the question is which players will be able to catch the attention of each club.
"As it is only the first day, we will have to wait and see until tomorrow," said Jang Soo-yeon, the new manager of Pepper Savings Bank, who is new to the tryout. "I will also check the skills of the players I have paid attention to."
IBK Industrial Bank manager Kim Ho-cheol and Marcello Avondan, manager of Heungkuk Life Insurance, also agonized, saying, "Overall, we do not see good players compared to last season." The possibility of nomination seemed high, but some clubs regretted that Dejaret Madan (22, Cuba), who was absent due to the transfer of the national team, would not participate.
