Tim Sherwood has overlooked 'captain' Son Heung-min

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has overlooked 'captain' Son Heung-min in his pick for the best player of the year.

British media outlet TBR Football reported on Aug. 8 (KST) that "Sherwood chose two of Spurs' best players over Son Heung-min. He chose Cristian Romero and Micky Vander Penn, not Son Heung-min, who scored the most goals in the team with 17. It could be argued that Son's goals didn't have much of an impact.

Sherwood spent his playing days at Blackburn Rovers. He played for Tottenham and Portsmouth Copentry before retiring. He was the manager of Tottenham from 2013 to 2014, before Son Heung-min joined Spurs. He then went on to manage Aston Villa before becoming a pundit.

According to TBR Football, Sherwood had high praise for the central defense duo of Christian Romero and Micky Vander Penn.

'Sherwood analyzed Tottenham's recent performances,' TBRFootball said. Interestingly, he singled out two defenders as Spurs' best players this season despite recent results.

Spurs are on a four-game losing streak. They lost 0-4 against Newcastle, 2-3 against Arsenal, 안전놀이터 추천 0-2 against Chelsea, and 2-4 against Liverpool. In four games, they've scored four goals and conceded 13. The offense hasn't been great, but the defense has been even worse. That's why TBRFootball calls Sherwood's assessment "interesting".

"Vander Penn has a hamstring problem, but he's very fast. And Romero, they're the two best players. If I had to pick one, it would be Romero, and I wouldn't change them," Sherwood said.

TBRFootball says: "Tottenham's defense has been incredibly poor of late. It's hard to praise the two center backs, but it's also hard to single out the defenders given the lack of support from the midfield. Tottenham have a decent defensive unit. They just need to improve their structure," he said.

Son Heung-min has 17 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this season. It's the eighth consecutive year he's scored in double figures, dating back to the 2016-2017 season. His previous highest goal total in a season was 23 in 2021-2022. His 17 goals are second only to the 2020-2021 season. Tottenham have three games left to add to their tally.

At the same time, Heung-Min Son will be chasing his third Tottenham hat-trick (10 goals, 10 assists).

In the 32-year history of the Premier League, which began in 1992, there have been 43 members of the Ten Ten Club. Only 14 players have achieved it twice, including Son Heung-min.

Only five have done it three times. Wayne Rooney (Man United), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool - 5 times), Eric Cantona (Man United), Frank Lampard (Chelsea - 4 times), and Didier Drogba (Chelsea - 3 times). All of them are legends of their respective clubs and the Premier League. Son Heung-min is one assist away from joining Drogba.
