High school graduates face off with 11th milestone in Hanwha history

Hanwha won 8-3 at home against the Kiwoom Heroes at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon on Sunday. The Eagles recorded the Winning Series for the first time in 42 days after the opening game at home. The team now has 16 wins and 24 losses. Kiwoom recorded 24 losses (16 wins) in this season. The two teams tied for eighth place.

The Hanwha Eagles named Cho Dong-wook (20), a high school graduate, as the starting pitcher. After graduating from Jangchung High School, Cho was drafted by the Hanwha Eagles in the second round of the 2024 Rookie Draft (11th overall).

Cho Dong-wook, who was called the "5 Eagle Brothers" along with Hwang Joon-seo, the first round of Hanwha and the first overall pick, tied up Kiwoom's batters based on his stable control.

Cho Dong-wook's best fastball speed on the day was 145 kilometers, and he mixed change-ups (16) and sliders (12) to score one run (non-independent) in six innings, three hits, four outs and one run.

Cho Dong-wook, who passed the first and second innings without allowing a run, got a hit to the right at the batter's box with one out in the top of the third inning. In the process, right fielder Jonathan Peraza made a mistake of putting the ball back, putting the ball on the verge of the third base with one out, and eventually, Lee Yong-kyu's sacrifice fly gave him the first run.

Though he lost some points, he continued to display good pitching. He quickly erased the inning without losing any points through the sixth inning, and finished the game with 70 pitches, 10 pitches fewer than the maximum of 80 pitches.

The quality start of his debut as a high school graduate rookie pitcher came about six years after the Gwangju KIA Tigers on March 28, 2018. At that time, Yang Chang-seop had four hits, one walk, and one walk in six innings.

Kiwoom also had a rookie player with a high school diploma. After graduating from Seoul High School, Jeon Jun-pyo wore a Kiwoom uniform in the first round of the 2024 rookie draft. He has consistently gained experience with 2-1 loss and 6.10 ERA in 12 games this season.

On the day, Jeon faced off against Hanwha's batters by mixing up to 149 kilometers of fastball, curveball (10), fork (7) and two-seam (6). During the three innings, Jeon had two hits, four outs, struck out five and allowed two runs (non-earning).

Hanwha batters cheered up in the youngest's debut game. Choi Jae-hoon, the leadoff hitter at the bottom of the third inning, had a hit, and Choi In-ho's grounder to the front of the pitcher with one out led to the opponent's defense error, creating a chance for first and third base with one out. Afterwards, the game was tied with a wild pitch, and another defense error occurred at the batter's box in Ferraja, turning the game around 2-1.

Hanwha's offense continued in the bottom of the fourth inning. The leadoff hitter Kim Tae-yeon hit a double, and Moon Hyun-bin's bunt hit and Choi Jae-hoon's walk made the bases full. Since then, the score has widened the score to 5-1 with Jung Eun-won's timely hit, Choi In-ho's Jin-base hit, and Ahn Chi-hong's sacrifice fly.

Hanwha, which was in the mood, added a score with hits by Roh Si-hwan and Hwang Young-mook in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Kim Tae-yeon's two-run timely hit, and Moon Hyun-bin's extra-base hit widened the score to 7-1.

Hanwha sealed its victory in the bottom of the seventh inning. After two outs, Choi Jae-hoon hit a timely double following Lee Do-yoon's walk. The score was 8-1.

Kiwoom saved the chase with Lim Ji-yeol hitting a two-run home run after leading hitter Kim Si-ang got on base with an infield single in front of the pitcher in the top of the eighth inning. Lee Yong-kyu and Dawson's hit and Ko Young-woo's walk made it a two-out full-base chance, but the follow-up hit did not follow.

Following starter Cho Dong-wook's six-inning pitching, Hanwha's Lee Min-woo (1 ⅔ scoreless), Kim Kyu-yeon (2 ⅓ scoreless innings) and Joo Hyun-sang (1 ⅓ scoreless inning) maintained their victory.

Cho Dong-wook won his 11th career start of the KBO League after Hwang Joon-seo on March 31.

After Jeon Joon-pyo went down, Kiwoom came up with Yoon Seok-won (3 runs in one inning), Kim Sun-ki (2 runs in two innings) and Oh Seok-ju (1 run in two innings).
