Five-year suspension + Lee Dae-sung case
The KBL introduced an Asian quarter system ahead of the 2020-2021 season. After signing an agreement with Japan's B. League in the first season, Taichi Nakamura joined the Wonju DB. Starting from the 2021-2022 season, the scope of the Asian quarter was expanded to the Philippines, and all 10 clubs had Filipino Asian quarter players last season. Ethan Albano became the first Korean player to win the MVP award as he led the DB to win the MVP award.
However, it is true that KBL players cannot play in overseas leagues due to the regulations. Even if they want to play in overseas leagues after becoming an FA (free agent), if they receive a letter of intent to recruit, they must sign a contract with that team. If they refuse to participate, they will be subject to a five-year suspension. If they fail to return to Korea for five years, no one will be able to easily play in overseas leagues.
The most realistic approach would be to be arbitrary. With the consent of your club, you can challenge yourself to play abroad after being arbitrarily terminated. However, there is a contradiction. Although a player is declared as a retired player after three years as a member of an overseas team, the period of his career as a player is excluded. In other words, no matter how long he plays in an overseas league and returns, he or she must complete the remaining contract period to become a free agent. FA is the biggest right that a player can enjoy, and it is questionable whether he or she will try to go abroad until later.
For this reason, there were not many cases where players from the KBL played in overseas leagues. Park Jae-hyun (former Day One) and Jang Min-guk (former Samsung) headed to the Japanese B. League, but they lost their place in the KBL and left in hopes of playing time. Lee Hyun-joong (Illawara) and Yang Jae-min (Sendai), who settled down in their respective teams to some extent, went to overseas leagues immediately after graduating from school in the U.S., which is not the case above.
In addition, a new case of Lee Dae-sung (Mikawa) has recently emerged. Lee Dae-sung, who became a free agent last season, has expressed his willingness to play in overseas leagues. The Daegu Korea Gas Corporation, a member of the original team, accepted the offer on a grand scale, and the other nine clubs also did not sign a letter of intent, allowing them to play abroad without any sanctions. As a result, he joined Seahorse Mikawa in the B. League and had a successful first season.
However, a problem occurred when Lee Dae-sung recently applied for FA disclosure to KBL. He is considering returning to Korea and staying in Japan, but if he signs a contract with the KBL team, KGC will not receive any compensation. This is why there has been a critical public opinion that Lee Dae-sung played a season in Japan to be free from the compensation rule, which is an obstacle to his transfer.
Regarding the case of Lee Dae-sung, an official of the Korean A team said, "The Korea Gas Corporation deliberately released him, and he was stabbed in the back. The victim, Korea Gas Corporation, is clearly responsible. We should have expected that this could happen. Lee Dae-sung abused his compassion, but the club also had administrative flaws. There are obvious unexpected parts, so I think institutional supplementation is necessary."
"KGC released Lee Dae-seong without any conditions, which is another problem. Nevertheless, I believe Lee Dae-seong is largely to blame. The professional world is said to be cold-hearted, but he has lost faith and morals. The system needs to be improved again. I don't think it will be easy for clubs to moralize their players to send them overseas."
It is not easy for players to advance to overseas leagues due to KBL regulations, but it is expected that it will become more difficult due to the overlapping cases of Lee Dae-sung. It is necessary to supplement the system related to overseas league advancement. Although the decision has not been made yet, Lee Dae-sung is expected to be a hot potato until the end of the FA market.
"The problem is that the KBL is closed. There are too many regulations. It is closed to the public that the current rules should be followed more strictly so that players cannot go abroad. Just as a pro baseball team sends a player to the Major League through its posting system to collect transfer fees, the professional basketball team should also allow players who play overseas to receive transfer fees or rights. Only then will the market be formed and transferring become more active. The team should think about ways to freely move back and forth between Korea and overseas without losing money," he said.
