Kwak Myung-woo added a crime of reputation?the aftermath of the Korean volleyball tournament

The trade between OK Financial Group and Hyundai Capital was canceled due to the "Kwak Myung-woo incident."

According to the volleyball community, Kwak Myung-woo was recently sentenced by the court to six months in prison, one year of suspension, and one year of probation for violating the Communications Secret Protection Act and injury.

An official from OK Financial Group explained, "We can't reveal the details because there is a personal problem with the player, but we recently confirmed that the player has been prosecuted." He explained that he didn't know Kwak Myung-woo was convicted until he made a trade with Hyundai Capital on the 19th of last month.

In the end, there was no trade between the two teams. The OK Financial Group traded with middle blocker Cha Young-seok for the first round draft pick for the 2024-2025 season after giving up the setter Kwak Myung-woo to Hyundai Capital on April 19, but an official of the team said, "We have requested the Korea Volleyball Federation to withdraw the trade announcement."

It seems that it is not just a matter of withdrawing the trade. Kwak was already found guilty in the first trial in September last year, sparking controversy. He hid his crimes during the 2023-2024 season.

OK Financial Group claims it failed to find out Kwak's conviction in the first trial. "It is difficult to understand each and every player's private life. There is no way for the club to know unless the player speaks in person," a source at the team said. "It is not a matter that can be hidden. If we had figured it out, we would have taken immediate action."

Attention is focusing on the level of disciplinary action against Kwak. According to Article 10, Paragraph 1 of Chapter 3 of KOVO's reward and punishment regulations, "a member who commits sexual crimes including sexual harassment, violence, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, gambling, match-fixing, racism, school violence in the past, human rights violations, and other serious social crimes that damage his dignity are subject to disciplinary action."

The federation plans to hold related discussions when it returns to Korea on the 14th after completing its tryout schedule for foreign players in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates UAE. "We will return to Korea to find out the situation accurately and discuss it," a federation official said. "We are also considering whether to hold a reward and punishment committee."

The withdrawal of the trade also disrupted each club's plans for the new season.

In particular, Hyundai Capital, which tried to reinforce the setter, suffered a big loss. Kim Myung-kwan tried to fill the gap caused by joining the Sangmu with Kwak Myung-woo, but it failed, and he is troubled.

Kwak Myung-woo is a 10-year veteran setter who joined OK Financial Group as the first choice in the second round of the 2013-2014 rookie draft. He played a key role by leading OK Financial Group to two consecutive championship titles in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.

In particular, he played in 34 games 126 sets in the 2023-2024 season, serving as a field commander. He contributed greatly to OK Financial Group's advance to the championship game and the runner-up with his side blocking and stable game management using his tall height of 193 centimeters.

OK Financial Group also failed to strengthen its middle blocker. The OK Financial Group, which brought in Cha Young-seok, gave up renewing contract with Asian quarterback Bayarsaihan of Mongolia and named outside heater Zhang Binglong of China, but the deal fell through and the plan fell through.

In the 2016-2017 season, Cha joined Hyundai Capital as the second choice in the second round of the rookie draft and played for seven seasons. He was praised for his strong basic skills and fast-paced skills.

In the 2023-2024 season, he played in 27 games 86 sets and ranked fourth in the fastball league. After the end of the season, he became a free agent and renewed his contract with Hyundai Capital.

With the draft for men's foreign players completed, the two teams are still agonizing over the withdrawal of trade. It remains to be seen how they will come up with countermeasures.
