Bahed Province in favor of relocating Camrose Casino
This month, Barhead County deputies announced they could support a request to relocate the Camrose Resort Casino to Edmonton. The lawmakers believe more money will flow into rural nonprofits in the region by supporting the proposal from Capital City Casino.
Not long ago, Capital City Casino sent a request to Alberta Gaming Liquor and Cannabis to approve a possible relocation of Camrose Casino to Edmonton's Ellersley industrial area. However, gambling regulators later rejected the proposal as many locals opposed the measure. The operator is now appealing the rejection.
On February 7, 2023, the Barhead County deputies decided to draft a letter to AGLC to review the decision and ask for approval to move the casino to Edmonton. I have to explain that Capital City Casino wanted to relocate from Camrose because it could no longer operate financially due to AGLC's two decisions.
The operator also claimed Crown was effectively harming local charities in the defined area of Camrose-St Albert AGLC with the decision. These organizations and nonprofits receive less funding than others because casinos deliver less proceeds if they don't move to the Edmonton address. The company stated that it would still serve the same charity if it moved.
Meanwhile, rural Alberta municipalities are also supporting the request, said Liv Doug Drozzd. He said the relocation makes sense because it will increase potting in the Camrose area and Alberta. He explained that the move made sense to the AGLC, but that political positions were involved and that the royal family decided to reject the move.
Also, policy and advocacy manager Whyte Skobron said casinos in St Albert and Camrose would generate the lowest revenue per event and have the highest wait times for nonprofits. He also explained that the relocation would not be a long-term solution to inequality in the charity gaming system, but it would be a sign that regulators are seeing flaws in the current gaming system.
Moreover, Mr Drozd said it would be a good thing if the county could influence the AGLC's decision. He also noted that casinos in the city are not new because there are already casinos in Calgary that provide funding for nearby local charities. He acknowledged that casinos are not perfect because there is a fairer model like raising funds across the state.
It is worth noting that AGLC's unique gambling model can benefit the Albertan community and charities. This model allows organizations to fund operations by hosting bingo and lottery nights. The Crown's representative said the policy was always committed to supporting stakeholders and making things accessible.
