Virjaya GEN Malaysia rejects second Malaysian casino deal

On Friday, Edge Financial Media issued a statement on behalf of lottery expert Vincent Tan, a Malaysian businessman at Berjaya Corp Bhd, describing it as an "inaccurate" report on the possibility of a second casino in Malaysia. According to previous reports, the casino was to be set up in Forest City, a struggling real estate development company in Malaysia's Johor province, just off Singapore.

Malaysia's political leader, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, on Thursday described Bloomberg News' report on the topic as "lies" and "not true."

Citing Berjaya Corp, The Edge said on Friday: "An article in question titled 'Malaysia is in talks with entrepreneurs about casinos to revive $100 billion Forest City' (Bloomberg LP) and 'Malaysia is discussing casinos in Forest City' (The Edge Singapore) contains inaccurate information that we are believed to have been involved in discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding the Forest City project."

Referring to Mr Tan's honorific name and his full Chinese name in Malaysia, the statement added: "We want to make it clear that Than Sri Dato's Seri Vincent Tanchiyun was not involved in those discussions and refute the inaccurate claims presented in the article."

Lim Kok Thai of global casino group Genting is also said to have attended the Forest City-themed conference.

Meanwhile, Genting Malaysia Bhd said it was not involved in discussions about the possibility of opening a casino in Johor, the New Straits Times reported, citing a statement from the company.

"Neither the company nor Tan Sri Lim were involved in such discussions or meetings, and the allegations made are not true," the company said in a statement.

"We ask all parties to immediately stop the publication and dissemination of misinformation, remove untrue claims and provide clarification to the public to prevent further confusion," he added.

Genting currently operates Malaysia's only casino resort, Resorts World Genting, in Genting Highlands outside the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, who is also the sultan of Malaysia's ceremonial monarch state of Johor, now owns more than 20% of the joint venture vehicles involving Forest City's master developer, Chinese real estate company Country Garden Holdings, according to a Bloomberg report on Thursday.
