Gwak Been has been voted South Korean baseball's top player for May

Doosan Bears starting pitcher Gwak Been has been voted South Korean baseball's top player for May.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced Tuesday that Gwak won the Player of the Month honor for May, after receiving 24 out of 30 votes from the media and 76,251 out of 421,536 votes cast by fans. Those voting totals were converted to 49.04 points, with LG Twins reliever Kim Jin-sung finishing second with 21.59 points.

Kim led all candidates in fan votes with 153,920, but only received two votes from the media.

Gwak went a perfect 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA and 29 strikeouts in five starts covering 30 1/3 innings in May. For the month, Gwak led all starters in wins and ERA. In three of those five outings, Gwak did not surrender any run.

It was an impressive turnaround for Gwak, who was 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA in five starts in April.

With Gwak leading the charge for the starting rotation, the Bears posted the best record in the KBO in May with 16-8-2 (wins-losses-ties).

Gwak became the first Bear to win the monthly award since Ariel Miranda was named the best player for October 2021.
