Macao Game Role Certification Good Idea
An employee license or professional certification system for a Macau-Casino operating role, if difficult to implement, would be a good idea to propose a local labor organization representing young workers, comment to GGRAsia, and refer to recent industry surveys. What or who could be held accountable for such a system was not covered in this article.
The labor group, the Macau Young Game Industry Workers Association, commissioned the Center for Game and Tourism Research at the University of Macao Polytechnic to conduct a survey measuring game workers' thoughts on the subject of licensing.
"Our desire is for a professional certification system to ultimately improve the quality and professionalism of our industry employees and support quality of service within the sector," Benjamin Roy, president of the association, told GGRAsia.
"The introduction of a real employee license system may allow Macau to take the path of new regulations," Macau Polytechnic University acknowledged in a summary of its findings.
The survey was conducted in July and August, with more than half of the 519 respondents already in the gaming sector for more than a decade.
Results released this month showed that 343 people, or 66.1% of respondents, were in favor of either a certification or a professional certification system for game management positions.
According to the survey results, about three-quarters of the 176 other respondents "didn't understand much" about the concept.
The industry employees who took the quiz were selected from table games, slots, marketing, casino cages, and surveillance departments, respectively, and worked as table game dealers, pit managers, slot managers, or administrators.
The certification system itself also requires "cooperation and agreement" involving the government, game operators and employees in the sector, Loi acknowledged.
His association is said to currently have more than 1,000 members, with the majority in middle or senior manager positions within the operations of the city's six game licensees.
Courses for casino and hospitality sector professionals have long been an element of higher education in Macau.
According to the latest data from the Macau Census Bureau, as of the third quarter, about 71,000 people were employed in the gaming sector in Macau, including game promoters. The figures are based on data reported through Macau's employees. The tally made gaming the largest employer in the sector, accounting for 19.2 percent of Macau's employment workforce.
Median earnings for gaming employees in the third quarter were 20,500 MOPs ($2,544), the second highest among all sectors, according to Census Services data. Median earnings for financial employees in the same quarter were the highest at 22,000 MOPs.
