Osaka Hits 20 Million Annual Visitors After IR Opens

Osaka Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama said the Japanese metropolitan area (pictured) aims to attract 20 million foreign visitors a year when the casino's MGM Osaka Integrated Resort (IR) opens, possibly in the fall of 2030.

His remarks came from a lecture at the Kansai Corporate Executive Council.

The mayor suggested that even 10 million foreign tourists a year could boost fresh consumption in the local economy, which amounts to 1.1 trillion yen ($7.73 billion)

Doubling the number of tourists visiting Osaka could add an additional 1 trillion yen in stimulus to the local economy, Yokohama suggested.

MGM Osaka's conference, incentive, conference and exhibition (MICE) space will triple to 60,000 square feet within 10 years of the resort's launch, the mayor said in a speech on Friday.

In early September, Osaka authorities referred to "fall 2030" as early as the resort opened, and said initial investment costs of 1.80 trillion yen (now $7.59 billion) would increase by 190 billion yen.

The project implementation agreement signed on Sept. 28 between Osaka authorities and Osaka IRKKK calls for ground preparations on the site of Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay, to begin construction-ready work sometime in the summer of 2024.

Osaka IRKK is a U.S.-based casino operator MGM Resorts International, Japan's Orix Corporation and other small investors.
