St. Albert Charity Suffers from Charity Game Models
At the end of 2022, Camrose Resort Casino released some worrying data about St Albert's charity. According to the report, the casino said St Albert's gambling fundraiser generated almost the lowest revenue per game night in the region. This is why the property is calling for a change in the charity game model because rural nonprofit organizations are at a disadvantage.
Casino Nights in St Albert are reported to accumulate only C$8,100 per non-profit organization. The number is the second lowest in the state after Camrose, where charities receive C$6,100. In contrast, Edmonton charities make an amazing C$39,000 and Calgary Casino Night makes more than C$42,000 per organization.
Like many other organizations in the state, the St. Albert Islands rely on casino nights for its budget. However, there are some organizational problems with the St Albert Islands, as the region has the highest waiting times for non-profit organizations to participate in gambling nights. Organizations and NPOs have to wait an average of 31 months, which is far from ideal for them.
Currently, according to the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, access to gambling facilities depends on their geographical location, so groups in st. Albert can only host gambling nights in local casinos. Doug Campbell, president of the St. Albert Community Foundation, said relying on casino nights for funds is a loss strategy and non-profit organizations should not rely too much on it.
Campbell said Game Night allows organizations to improve basic programs and services. He believes the solution must be multifaceted for Saint Albert to gain access to the Edmonton market. He also added that bingo is not a viable option due to the popularity of VLT and that the organization must be innovative to raise funds through Gambling Night.
In addition, the chairman of the organization noted that the situation in the city is highly competitive because local businesses are out for support, and local organizations are competing with large Edmonton charities for corporate donations. And according to him, big city charities think of Saint Albert as a source of cash income.
Tensions have risen in recent weeks due to differences in accessibility between urban and rural areas, as AGLC rejected a request to relocate the Camrose Resort casino to South Edmonton. The casino is owned by Capital City Casino, and Chairman Jason Petchett is not satisfied with the Crown Agency's decision to prevent the relocation.
He said the AGLC has been treating rural charities unfairly for decades. He explained that with the current community structure for the Camrose and St Albert families, the proposed relocation would have proved beneficial to hundreds of rural Albertans who live in communities from the BC border to the Saskatchewan region.
