Pittsburgh moves to 26-man roster in big league

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Wednesday (Korea time) that they will move to the 26-man roster of the Major League Baseball. The first thing that stands out is the call-up of first baseman and outfielder Billy McKinney (30).

McKinney, who made his major league debut for the New York Yankees in 2018, joined the team by signing a minor league contract with Pittsburgh ahead of this season. Unable to join the Major League's opening roster, he accepted Triple-A under Pittsburgh, and eventually enjoyed joining the big leagues at the end of the season.

McKinney is an outfielder with the same position as Bae. Therefore, local media in Pittsburgh predicted that if McKinney is called up, Bae could go down to the minor league. However, fate once again sided with Bae.

In time for McKinney's call-up, Pittsburgh's main third baseman Kibryan Hayes (27) was placed on the 10-day injured list due to back pain, leaving Bae Ji-hwan dramatically on the roster once again.

Outfielder Joshua Palacios (29), another potential contender, also returned the same day after a rehab game in Minor Triple-A, but Pittsburgh sent Palacios back to the minors using an option instead of Bae Ji-hwan.

Palacios, who is from New York and made his big league debut in 2021, has appeared in a total of 20 games in the big league this season, with a batting average of 0.230 and two home runs and seven RBIs. His OPS, which combines on-base percentage and slugging percentage, is 0.663.

His performance is better than Bae's batting average of 0.200, four RBIs and OPS of 0.485. Despite this, Pittsburgh seems to have decided to give younger Bae more opportunities than older ones. The fact that Palacios is an imported player while Bae was raised in the Pittsburgh farm is partly attributable to the fact that his arms bend inward.

On the same day, Pittsburgh recruited right-handed pitcher Hunter Stratton (28) back to the big league from Minor Triple-A. Having pitched in 34 games in this season's major leagues, he has two wins, one loss, one save and an ERA of 3.68.

In order to make a place for Stratton on the 26-man roster of the Major League, the Pittsburgh Pirates took measures to release right-handed pitcher Ryan (DFA).

Bae Ji-hwan came to the big league temporarily to fill the vacancy of fellow outfielder Brian Reynolds (29) who briefly left the team to attend the funeral of his close friend at the end of last month. Then Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton confirmed this in an interview with MHN Sports at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

However, luck has begun to fall on Bae. Second baseman Nick Gonzalez (25) was out of his team's roster after suffering a left groin injury while running base in the game the day after Bae was called up to the big league. Veteran outfielder and designated hitter Andrew McCutchen (37) also left the team due to knee injury last week, prolonging Bae's remaining oxygen respiratory system in the big league.

Given the Pittsburgh atmosphere, chances are high that Bae will stay in the Major League until the end of the season unless he uses his last name. Whether he will save or kill a hard-won opportunity now depends on Bae's performance.
