The popularity of poker may spark a legislative debate in Iowa

The problem is a game called Texas Hold'Em that is being played for a fortune in Las Vegas. Texas Hold'Em tournaments are often televised. The proposed method can also address how much money can make a difference in a poker game, but it can also open up debates over the entire theme of gambling.

Joe Diaz, a criminal investigation officer dealing with gambling issues, told the Legislative Oversight Committee that the game is becoming increasingly popular as a fundraiser and a social event.

It's playing everywhere, Diaz said.

Jean Davis of the prosecutor's and appeals department said gambling restrictions were included in a series of locations in state law, and the issue has become more complicated as states dive deeper into gambling businesses.

Beginning in the 1980 s, the state government approved parimutuel betting. It then approved lottery tickets and casinos statewide.

We don't have a long history of gambling, but there are so many forms of gambling, Davis told the government oversight committee, a joint House and Senate panel.

Scott Raecker, R-Urbandale MP, said the rapid expansion of gambling in the state has created confusing and often contradictory laws.

Mr. Davis said card games are typically limited to winning or losing $50 within 24 hours, but Mr. Lacquer said he had heard of poker games that won or lost hundreds of dollars.

There's ambiguity about what the law is, Raecker said.

He asked Davis and Diaz to draft legislation to clear the mess, acknowledging that it would likely be a complex task for the legislature next election year.

Senator Mary Lundby, R-Marion, said it might be the right time for the debate because many lawmakers are obsessed with the profits the state makes from gambling and are unable to reject proposals to expand the industry.
