Fantastic, Mike! I love your little lamp, I see a big improvement in your drawing skills already, and especially how well you are drawing the ellipse. Congratulations!
I don’t have to ask you which method of measuring you prefer:) I can see that you felt more comfortable using your ruler:)You’ve measured very well here, the only suggestion that I have in that regard is to check and double check your measurements as you go. I sometimes even triple check, LOL! I am always amazed at how many small adjustments can be made because the goal when drawing in realism is to create as accurate an outline drawing as I possibly can. It is so much easier to refine the drawing at this early stage.... saves a lot of frustration later on.
Your ellipses as I mentioned earlier are really good, just slight adjustments can be made... in the attachment, I've drawn over your them so that you can see where...notice most are very minor, just the width of a pencil line:) With narrow ellipses like the one at the top, try placing a ruler, or drawing a line like I have on top of the original and your drawing then compare the negative space.
Great job on the lampstand, the curve on the left side is beautiful! I love it! The right side just needs to be adjusted slightly in order to make it the same. Measure out from the centre guideline the same amount of distance as the other side. See the dots that I have made while plotting the curve. When you sketch the curve, go through the middle of the dots. I love that you have used your sketching stroke:), your sketched line is quite wide though and that can cause some outages. Once you have achieved the curve that you want, You just need to firm it up and erase the unwanted lines.
