How to Harvest Aloe Vera: A Step-by-Step Guide for Fresh, Healing Gel

Harvesting aloe vera properly ensures that you get the highest quality gel while keeping your plant healthy for future use. Start by selecting a mature aloe vera plant that is at least one year old, with thick, fleshy leaves. Choose the outermost leaves near the base of the plant, as these are the oldest and most nutrient-rich.

Using a clean, sharp knife or scissors, cut the leaf as close to the base as possible without damaging the rest of the plant. Once harvested, stand the leaf upright in a cup or bowl for about 10–15 minutes to allow the yellow sap (aloin) to drain out. Aloin can be irritating to the skin, so it's best to discard this part. After draining, rinse the leaf thoroughly under cool water.

To extract the gel, lay the leaf flat, trim off the spiky edges, and carefully remove the top layer of skin. Scoop out the clear, jelly-like substance inside with a spoon. Use the gel immediately or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Regular, careful harvesting allows your aloe plant to regenerate, giving you a sustainable source of natural, healing gel.
