You’re absolutely right that alcohol can mess with your sleep cycle in ways you may not even realize at first. The thing is, alcohol impacts REM sleep more than anything else, and that’s the stage of sleep that helps your brain recharge properly. I once read about how booze wrecks REM sleep here: https://unitedrecoveryproject.com/rehab-blog/how-booze-wrecks-your-rem/. It explained how alcohol might make you fall asleep quicker, but it actually shortens and fragments REM. That’s why you wake up groggy or feel unrested even after a full night’s sleep. When I cut back, I noticed I was dreaming more and feeling sharper in the mornings, which is a direct sign of better REM. It’s not easy to quit completely, but even just reducing how much you drink before bed can change your mornings drastically.
